Ucrete Flooring: The Hardest Floor for Heavy Industry

Some floors just get destroyed. You walk into a food processing plant or a petrochemical facility six months after handover and the coating is gone, the concrete is pitting, and the drainage channels are cracking at every joint. That is not a maintenance problem. That is a specification problem.

Ucrete is a polyurethane concrete system, not a coating. It is a 9mm topping that bonds to the substrate and cures into one of the hardest wearing surfaces available in industrial construction. We have installed it on sites across Saudi Arabia where temperatures exceed 50°C at slab level and where thermal shock from hot washdowns is a daily event.

What Makes Ucrete Different from Epoxy or Standard PU

Epoxy fails in industrial environments for a predictable reason: it is brittle under thermal cycling. When a forklift drops a metal pallet on a standard epoxy floor at 45°C, the impact energy has nowhere to go. Delamination follows. Ucrete, by contrast, has a compressive strength above 60 MPa and a flexural strength that allows the material to absorb dynamic load without cracking at the bond line.

The system is cementitious at its core, meaning it breathes with the substrate. That is critical in Saudi Arabia where concrete slabs undergo significant thermal movement between night and day. Standard coatings do not accommodate that movement. Ucrete does.

Chemical resistance is the other axis. Ucrete withstands continuous exposure to acids down to pH 1, oils, fats, and cleaning agents used in food and pharmaceutical production. On one project we completed for a food processing client in the Eastern Province, the floor faced daily caustic wash cycles at 80°C. A standard epoxy system would not have lasted three months. The Ucrete installation passed the client's HACCP audit and Saudi Food and Drug Authority inspection without remediation.

Installation: What the Numbers Actually Look Like on Site

Surface preparation is where most failures start. We shot-blast to an ICRI CSP 5-6 profile before any Ucrete application. Anything less and you are gambling with bond strength. Pull-off tests after preparation must read above 1.5 MPa before we prime. If we get a reading below that, we go back and prep again. No exceptions.

The mix is mechanically combined in a forced-action mixer, not a drum mixer. Pot life at 35°C ambient is roughly 20-25 minutes, so sequencing matters. We work in bays no wider than what one crew can finish in 15 minutes. Thickness is held to 9mm plus or minus 1mm using depth pins at 1.5m centres. Surface tolerance is checked against a 3m straightedge and must stay within plus or minus 3mm, consistent with TR34 Category 2 floor requirements.

In our experience, the biggest mistake contractors make here is rushing the curing phase. Ucrete reaches foot traffic strength in around 3 hours at 25°C, but full chemical resistance takes 7 days. We have seen clients reopen floors to forklift traffic at 24 hours and full chemical exposure at 48 hours. Both decisions caused surface degradation that looked like a material failure. It was not a material failure.

Curing in Saudi summer conditions requires shading the freshly laid surface from direct sun and maintaining substrate temperature below 40°C during application. Above that threshold, pot life drops sharply and you risk incomplete hydration of the cement phase.

Where Ucrete Fits in Saudi Industrial Projects

Ucrete is specified on Saudi Aramco projects under their materials and equipment standards, specifically where floors must resist hydrocarbon spillage alongside mechanical abuse. If you are tendering a project under Aramco's SAES or SASC specifications and the floor is inside a processing facility, expect Ucrete or an equivalent polyurethane concrete to be the baseline requirement.

Vision 2030 industrial zones, including the new integrated logistics and manufacturing hubs at KAEC and Ras Al-Khair, are driving up the standard of industrial flooring specification across the Kingdom. Facility operators are no longer accepting reactive maintenance cycles. They want floors that perform for 15-20 years under continuous load. Ucrete, when installed correctly to the manufacturer's data sheet and site-specific subfloor conditions, delivers that lifespan.

For clients specifying across multiple floor zones in a single facility, we often combine Ucrete in processing and washdown areas with epoxy systems in dry warehouse and office transition zones. The two systems can be detailed to meet at a threshold joint cleanly. Substrate flatness across both zones must be consistent, which is why we recommend laser screed concrete placement during the structural pour as a prerequisite for any high-performance topping system.
